In the Winter of 2018-19, ALTERED MEANS hunkered down at The Bakery Atlanta, a multi-faceted arts complex, with a time-based art bar called bakie’s kansas city. Well folks, bakie’s kansas city is BACK! This time, we’re at The Bakery’s new space at New Square in Underground Atlanta. Opening on December 18, 2019, find us on Wall St between Peachtree and Pryor for five days of art and programming. Be sure to reserve your seat now because that comfy chair can’t save itself.
Based loosely on Max’s Kansas City, a nightclub in NYC that was open from 1965 to 1981 and became a gathering spot for artists, musicians, poets, and the like, bkc is a cozy space for experimentation, conversation, and fun. bakie’s kansas city is your new favorite place. Hang out, grab a bev, bring a friend, maybe make a new one, and partake in some adventures. Zapah_Lab even made us a special candle, so take it all in.
Getting Here:
We are located right across the street from the Five Points Marta station, so riding Marta is a great option. Ridesharing if ya can works too – the best place to get dropped off is either the corner of Wall St and Pryor or Wall St and Peachtree. If driving, there are parking decks on MLK and metered parking in the surrounding area. Please take note that on the weekdays between 4-7pm there is no street parking on Pryor right around New Square. Just FYI!

Blair LeBlanc was born in Atlanta, GA and raised in Peachtree Corners, GA where she currently lives. She received a BFA in photography from Georgia State. Her work has been shown extensively in Atlanta, selected group exhibition include Picture Newspaper, Murmur; re:Fresh, Swan Coach House; Now-How, The Low Museum. This is her first solo exhibition.

Join ALTERED MEANS for Wretched Sickness: New Work by Fremy Ma in bkc. Begin the evening with a guided meditation, traverse into a video screening and performance, and round it off with some discussion.
Wretched Sickness is a video performance by Fremy Ma, edited and presented by Joey Molina, about mental and spiritual renewal. As trauma infests the body, that energy must be channeled and navigated to create release. The video captures physical transformations that can shape into numerous manifestations and uses spoken word to realize the agony and joy of the body in-between. The video also incorporates a series of youtube clips that replicate traumatic experiences as deep seeded and bursting from within.

Featured during the program is Blinkhorn’s Drought, a personal narrative regarding the influence society can have on the way individual(s) view the sexual identity of and intimacy with the disabled. Using her form, surrogates, and sound. Blinkhorn creates a visually engaging scene while selectively pointing to audience members and assigning tasks that encourage physical interaction between herself and the viewer.

The songs for the people with artists William Downs & Michi Meko features a live recording of Wattstax, a benefit concert organized by Stax Records commemorating the 7th anniversary of the 1965 rebellion in the African-American community of Watts in LA. Downs and Meko will also play records that support Wattstax and will discuss what they listen to in their studios. Additionally, they will address how this music fits in the world of people trying to make their way through life.
